Anthony McCarten s play The Pope which is the basis for the film The Two Popes feels very much like a rough draft for his eventual screenplay While the film and McCarten s screenplay would ultimately make this story about Pope Benedict and Pope Francis it s strange to me how much McCarten s play introduces all sorts of superfluous characters most of whom are almost non existent in the original film I think after writing the play McCarten must ve realized that he could make this story simpler when it s almost entirely about those two popesI do admire the simplicity of this play though only two acts the latter of which focuses on just these two popes talking These moments between them are certainly the most interesting part of this story and I almost wish the entire play was just these two in conversation Also due to the limitations of the play format as opposed to film I like how much simpler this play is than the film The film goes into flashbacks that I only felt took me out of the film and muddled the basic idea too much But here all that flashback material is told through conversation and I find the story to be stronger because of itAgain it s hard to see this as anything than a rough draft for the film though I believe McCarten must have started the screenplay before this play even premiered and McCarten even wrote a supplemental book further explaining the history of these two popes The Pope ends up feeling like a solid idea that will be fleshed out in a stronger way through further iterations The Two Popes written by Anthony McCartenNine out of 10Pope Francis has just been in the news and not for some challenge to the conservative establishment and doctrine of one of the oldest institutions in the world representing a community which is larger than one billion although they talk in this very good movie about the loss of men and women who abandon the Catholic church in the Western world albeit seem to adhere in the emerging countries where they discuss about ways to adapt to difficult circumstances such as allowing priests to marry in remote parts of the A couple of days ago around New Year s Eve a woman had grabbed the pontiff and he was uite upset about it apparently slapping her hand twice only to apologize to her later in a public sermon showing again the kindness gentle nature that we are used with and which is portrayed in this film nominated for four Golden Globes to be awarded in a matter of hoursabout twelve including for Best Motion Picture Drama Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Jonathan Pryce and Supporting Role for Anthony Hopkins Best Screenplay for Anthony McCarten and many other important awardsJonathan Pryce is memorable as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio first and then Pope Francis in a complex role for if we had known about the modest friendly side of the leader of than one billion faithful we have the chance in this feature to see him mournful thinking of a tragic past in his home country Argentina during which he had tried to balance a concern protective attitude towards his priests with the need to allow some Jesuits to continue their work for castaways which had been stigmatized by the military junta and in his painful actions the leader of the Jesuit community of the time seems to have helped although inadvertently the dictators in their mission of torturing those who oppose them including the priests that have been temporarily suspended by the ounger BergoglioAnthony Hopkins is eually admirable in a character that appears less charming if at all than the South American clergy Cardinal Ratzinger who would become Pope Benedict a controversial figure insulted by many as a Nazi facing multiple challenges from his statement that appeared to incriminate Islam as a violent faith to the scandals plaguing the Vatican Bank pedophilia people in his entourage and his own tolerant approach to the crimes of priests who have been just moved from one parish to another after victims had accused them of sexual misconduct or worse rape abuse and so on with the view that it is better for tens or hundreds to suffer than for millions to lose their faith and ultimately their resurrection after deathIn fact in one of the many scenes they have together Benedict would confess to Bergoglio and vice versa with the former repentant of his role in the cover up of so many cases of sexual abuse though it is not clear if the cardinal Ratzinger On 28 February 2013 a 600 Silk and Steel year old tradition was shattered the conservative Pope Benedict XVI made a startling announcement He would resign Reeling from the news the College of Cardinals rushed to Rome to congregate in the Sistine Chapel to pick his successor Their unlikely choice Francis the first non European pope in 1200ears a one time tango club bouncer a passionate football fan a man with the common touchFrom the prize winning screen.
Ust had some of the evidence on his desk and sinfully abhorrently ignored it or and to what extent he might have been actively engaged in saving the monsters while Bergoglio talks about what happened during the junta when he had tried and saved multitudes but he was still guilty of exposing a few in his efforts to work with the officers in trying to convince them to let us say execute fewer than they had intended people who opposed the regime would be summarily shot clergy included then they disappeared apparently thrown from military planes into the ocean never to be recoveredThe satisfaction of the viewer would be mostly intellectual although important doses of sentimentalism would be inserted in the plot of a narrative that has the two men confront each other for a good while only to become excellent friends after some debates initially they seem to stand for two opposite views of the future of the church with Benedict an arch conservative and the Argentinian cardinal an exponent of the progressive view which he has manifested recently when he showed understanding for homosexuals divorces and other categories making Benedict uite upset with the public statements of the South American who has an answer for everything when challenged on the issue of homosexuals the divorced Bergoglio retorts with uotes from the scriptures mentioning the need to help the ones who need it most the most sinful or words to that effectThe uestion that the public might ask would be how accurate this rendering of private conversations which might represent 40% of the dialogue might be even if on the other hand the writer does show he has a brilliant imagination and the profiles meet with the public perception we are not actually shocked by revelations that if we thought Ratzinger to be intellectual aloof somewhat cold anyway when compared with the Latin counterpart in the film he turns out to be such an emotional effervescent fun loving extroverted man no he eats alone something that Bergoglio does not understand and mentions among the main things he would do differently if he had the role and enjoys a rather peculiar show on television Rex about a German shepherd police dog that solves crimesBenedict looks like he has no sense of humor when he jokes he has to explain that this was a German joke so it does not have to be funny and in this case he is amusing but apparently under the influence of his warmer modest kind friend he begins to see things differently he would even watch a football game with Bergoglio by then Francis in spite of the fact that he had declared that he had never understood the passion for that gameThe film is better than uite a few of the other nominees for the Golden Globe such as Knives Out or even Once upon a Time in Hollywood well if ou ask this cinephile many others have been enthused and love that Tarantino movie though it does not rise to the level of Parasite of Portrait of a Lady on fire both retold at 45Vatican in the news and me reading this book Such a cool coincidence Excellent history on these two men Benedict and Francis The backgrounds of both of these men surprised me The author did an excellent job of comparing and contrasting them As well he explains some of the decisions made by both A clearly written history that leads us to where we are in the church today Glad I read this Author Anthony McCarten is listed as a novelist and while this book looks like a historical account I have found a number of inconsistencies that make me affirm that it is in fact a historical novel albeit current history There are numerous footnotes which also give the appearance of being a critical narrative However many of McCarten s sources are encyclopedia entries or interviews in the popular press Many of these kinds of sources are actually deeply antagonistic to Bergoglio andor Ratzinger and there is little in the way of sources to counter that antagonism Having said this I recommend the book It is a good novel well written and understood as literature it raises many important and legitimate uestions that I as a member of the Church feel we need to continually ask ourselves Thanks Anthony McCarten Well done I picked up this book because I saw the preview for the Netflix film and I wanted to get the story While the sections on the conclaves from 2005 and 2013 were good the rest of the book was meh and it didn t really provide anything new that wasn t alre. Writer of The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour The Pope is a fascinating revealing and often funny tale of two very different men whose destinies converge with each other they both live in the Vatican and the wider worldHow did these two men become two of the most powerful people on EarthWhat's it like to be the PopeWhat does the future hold for the Catholic Church and its 1 billion followers The Pope is a dual biography that masterful.
Ady known from articles documentaries etc To that extent it s not really meant to be a history like a review of all of the articles and documentaries produced to this moment But to be fair I also said the same about McCarten s book Darkest Hour I am not Catholic but I was swept up in the story of these two popes McCarten does a wonderful job telling intermingling their histories as well as the history of the church He respectfully satisfies the curiosity one has for the secret Vatican traditions and then catapults the reader into the meat of this event what came before to cause it and the impact it has had and is still having on the world This is a story I honestly didn t think I cared about but has become one of my most moving reads of the ear interesting book highlighting the lifes of the two popes Francis and Benedict where for the first time since 15th century there was 2 living popes Not everyone s choice I feel but I had a personal interest and found it a worthwhile read Anthony McCarten rose to fame with his nonfiction book Darkest Hour which got Gary Oldman an Oscar after he transformed himself into a Victorian Englishman and with his screenplay The Theory of Everything which nearly offered the same accolade to Eddie Redmayne McCarten is clearly a kingmaker and in this book The Pope Francis Benedict and the decision that shook the world he tackles one of the world s grandest institutions the Catholic Church At heart this book is a comparative study between the two Popes Francis and Benedict two very different men with somewhat similar backgrounds This background includes a close proximity with dictatorshipauthoritarian regimesfascism and violence For Joseph Ratzinger it meant a childhood and outh spent in Nazi Germany forceful enlisting in the Wehrmacht and in the Hitler Youth as well as a permanent fear of communism For Jorge Bergoglio it meant a whole life spent in a politically unstable country where the government changed at the whims of military juntas with the occasional human rights infringement to bootIt is undeniable that Ratzinger was much protected first by his parents and then by being lucky enough to live on the right side of the wall After the war ended he was offered the peace and freedom of West Germany which allowed him the luxury of complacency and a life spent in the proverbial Ivory Tower a place he should never have left Bergoglio s case is very different which is why his mistakes have much dire conseuences He spent his adulthood dealing directly with violence poverty and the disfranchising of the poor One of his closest friends was tortured and killed during the Argentinian Dirty War McCarten makes it clear that Bergoglio was partly to blame for the torture and imprisonment of two Jesuit priests a fact that he s tried to deny and actively conceal until this day It is fascinating that despite the gravity of Bergoglio s errors the reader still finds him sympathetic than Ratzinger We get the feeling and clearly so did McCarten that Bergoglio is aware of his sins and tries to atone for them Ratzinger sounds as if he believes himself sinless as if he lives on a plane of existence higher than the rest of humanity His blunders are owed not to the force of circumstances or difficult decisions They are of his making they are the product of his inability to lead to empathize with others and especially which is the most serious offense for a priest an utterly lack of self awareness and examination of the self The Ratzinger that emerges from McCarten s account is a disoriented old man who doesn t understand the world and what is worse doesn t understand himself To his credit McCarten does try to be impartial but his subjects don t really help We sympathize with Francis simply because Francis is much sympathetic My issue with the book is not the unbalance between the two personalities they are what they are The problem is that the structure of the book is very faulty and nonlinear He begins by telling us about Bergoglio then jumps to Ratzinger and then go backs to Bergoglio for no apparent reason Further it doesn t really tell us anything new It s not really a work of investigation but rather an account of information that can easily be found on the internet or in other books Overall a good introduction to the theme but by no means a comprehensive one I am looking forward for the Major motion picture they re making out of this thoug. Ly combines these two popes' lives into one gripping narrative From Benedict and Francis' experiences of war in their homelands when they were still Joseph and Jorge and the sexual abuse scandal that continues to rock the Church to its foundations to the intrigue and the occasional comedy of life in the Vatican The Pope glitters with the darker and the lighter details of life inside one of the world's most opaue but significant institutions.
